What is Corporate Insolvency?

Corporate insolvency refers to when a business is unable to pay its debts as and when they fall due, or when its liabilities exceed its assets. The reasons behind such financial issues are numerous, including: issues with cash flow, declining company performance, and excessive debt.

Common warning signs of corporate insolvency include: the business reaching its overdraft limit, being refused further borrowing opportunities, suppliers refusing credit, cheques bouncing, and complaints from creditors over repayment times.

There are two types of insolvency to be aware of:

  1. Balance Sheet Insolvency: Refers to a scenario where a firm’s liabilities are greater than its assets.
  2. Cash-flow Insolvency: When a company finds itself unable to pay its bills or debts as they fall due.

If the issue is acted upon promptly, it may be possible to save the business from collapse. If not, the firm may be forced to close — either voluntarily or involuntarily. Additionally, failure to act quickly could even lead to personal issues, making prompt, specialist company insolvency advice vital.
